Your wedding ceremony doesn’t have to be all serious faces and solemn vows — it can be the perfect time to inject a little personality and playfulness. One of my favourite ways to do this is with a Unity Shot.
A Unity Shot works just like a traditional unity candle or sand ceremony, but with a cheeky twist. Instead of pouring sand or lighting a flame, you and your partner each pour (or pick up) a shot of your favourite tipple, clink glasses, and down it together as a symbol of your shared life ahead. I’ve worked with couples who keep this just for themselves, and those who invite all their guests to join in, and even replace it with a “first champagne toast” right at the end of the ceremony. The laughter, cheers, and sparkle in the room are unforgettable.
This is also one of the brilliant benefits of having a Celebrant-led wedding — legal ceremonies can’t include alcohol, but with a Celebrant, you have the freedom to weave in fun, personal rituals like this without breaking any rules. It’s your day, your way.
Whether it’s a Unity Shot, a confetti cannon finale, or a surprise singalong, adding something unexpected ensures your ceremony is just as joyful and unique as the two of you.
