About Alex Marshall
About five years ago I went to a friend’s funeral that was held at her home in Frome, Somerset. It was led by a green fuse trained celebrant like me and I came away thinking that it was the most touching and memorable funeral I had ever been to.
It was undoubtedly a sad day, but more than anything it felt like a day where we could all express how much our friend had meant to us. It was interspersed with beautiful poetry and lovely classical music. Everyone was dressed brightly, the sun was shining and there was a palpable air of gratitude and celebration.
Afterwards, I got talking to the celebrant who led the service and in the course of that conversation came to the realisation that the work she was doing was the kind of work I would love to do as it was not only tremendously meaningful, but also a way for me to contribute to the lives of others.
I remember feeling strangely qualified to do this work even before I trained. Maybe it was because I too had experienced the profound loss that comes from losing close family members, and maybe because my 17 years as a alternative health practitioner saw me regularly working with people at vulnerable times of their lives. Whatever the reason, I do what I do because I care deeply about this work. Since that time I have personally written and conducted over 160 ceremonies, reflecting the whole spectrum of human beliefs and values.
I live in Lewes and work with families all over Sussex and the surrounding areas.
